Since 2008, Toner has been a part-time lecturer on the MA in Literature and Publishing at NUI Galway. He teaches two courses: Contemporary Publishing (EN579) and Copy-editing and Proofreading (EN581). Toner is also responsible for organising two industry visits for students per year. Companies visited include Penguin Ireland, Transworld Ireland, Gill & Macmillan, Hachette Ireland, Lonely Planet, Image Magazine, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Harmonia, Ashville Media Group, TheJournal.ie, Maximum Media, Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, Storyful and more.
As well as lecturing in NUI Galway, Toner has given talks on a range of musical topics at various conferences, and in 2014 gave the France Roche Memorial Lecture at the University of Limerick.
